How To Start A Growth Plan

You are probably reading this because you want to become a better version or yourself, you are hungry for a change, or maybe you are just curious about what self development is all about. That is fantastic to hear! I admire your courage to step forward towards a life that you desire and deserve.

Admitting that there are things that need to change in your life is the first step that you need to take and that is not easy to do.  I admitted my desperate need for a change when I was 25 years old. I was in major debt, divorced, did not have a place to call my own, and broken emotionally and physcially. I could no longer keeep doing what I was doing or else I would live an unfulling life.

“When we are no longer able to change the situation – we are challenged to change ourselves”

So now what? You want to do things differently but you dont know how or where to start. I evaluated my life from 6 categories : Career, finances, relationships, health, mental, spiritual. Maybe you want to evaluate all 6 or just stick to one for now – but within those categories  I asked myself these question:

Where am I at?

Evalute your life and where you are in this present moment. It will be uncomfortable to do. However, you cannot plan a road trip if you first don’t know where point A is. The same applies to your personal development journey. Here are some prompts about asking where you are at:

How are your finances? Are you in debt and constantly wondering where your money goes? Do you feel emotionally close your spouse? Do you have friends that you trust and can confide in? Are you overweight? Do you  mostly eat processed foods? Are you tired all the time and heavily depend on caffeine thorough the day? Are your emotions a roller coster? Do you feel like you are numbing yourself to get by? Are you excited about your life and where you are going?

Where do I want to be?

Now that you know where you are at, where is it that you would like to go in your life? You cannot change the past, but you are one decision away from changing your future! What are your dreams? What do you picture your life looking like 1 year, 5 years, or even 10 years down the road? For me personally I wanted be debt free, be comfortable being alone, implement emotionally healthy habits instead of stuffing my feelings inside, travel more, and find a career where I could help people.

Here are some more questions to prompt you:

How much money would you need in the bank to feel comfortable? What do you want your day to day look like with your significant other? Do you want to have more friends? If so, what kind of values do you want your friends to have? What kind of physical activities would you like to have the energy to do? What kind of places would you like to travel to?

How do I get there?

You know where you are at and you know where you want to do – how are you going to get there? In your road trip, now you have to select the route you are going to go to get to your destination. Some ideas for each category :

This could be setting a budget and sticking to it, investing your money instead of saving; having regular dates with your spouse or reaching out to your friends; meal prepping and eating out less, going for a walk insted of watching TV; reading a good book, praying.

“Sow an act, reap a habit. Sow a habit reap a character. Sow a character, reap destiny.”

Change does not happen over night, and you are not going to perfect. But if you stay consistent in making those better choices every day, you will see the results.
